My research focuses on health risks associated with climate variability and change. In a recently published study, I worked with scientists from China, Japan, Australia and the United States to assess how the rising carbon dioxide concentrations that are fueling climate change could alter the nutritional value of rice. We conducted field studies in Asia for multiple genetically diverse rice lines, analyzing how rising concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere altered levels of protein, micronutrients and B vitamins.
Our data showed for the first time that rice grown at the concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide scientists expect the world to reach by 2100 has lower levels of four key B vitamins. These findings also support research from other field studies showing rice grown under such conditions contains less protein, iron and zinc, which are important in fetal and early child development. These changes could have a disproportionate impact on maternal and child health in the poorest rice-dependent countries, including Bangladesh and Cambodia.
anything that is produced under capitalism can be produced under socialism better, more affordably, more sustainably, etc. but with that being said a lot of products won’t exist. and I really had to grapple with this idea for a long time, especially how to justify that to other people, but one day I realized that it was a ridiculous concern to have. it exemplifies the toxic nature of consumerism.
there are people dying on the streets because they don’t have a home or dying in their homes because they don’t have medicine, but you can’t purchase kellogg’s frosted flakes or whatever in cuba so I guess that means we’re superior. consumerism is insidious and damaging in many ways, and the fact that people, myself included, believe that you must have a choice between 35 different name brand cereals or freedom dies is a supreme demonstration of that.
I told my mom I was going to paint her something for Christmas but I have no idea what. I know she like comics and superheros. She’s edgy like black clothes and skulls and shit. She’s spiritual and very proud of her sobriety and she likes to cook. She has like 8 paintings of these weird chefs
the way americans are obsessed with the fuckin military is terrifying. I work as a cashier so I occasionally have to ask for donations for whatever the cause of the moment is. people will donate all the fuckin time to the troops but not only will they ignore homeless children, but they joke about it. they’re over here like “haha I have my own hungry children to feed” or “they should be donating to me I’m hungry” or other just straight up stupid unnecessary shit and it’s cruel, joking about homeless fuckin children. yet the mere mention of troops and they’re throwing all their money at me. these people are glorified murderers and americans eat that shit up and worship the ground they walk on. the brainwashing is un-fuckin-real
